Navigation and Electronics Training Method - Back Next
Captain Don's approach is to blend a simplified and practical understanding of fundamental chart reading, course plotting, and position fixing skills with current electronic navigation systems.
You will learn to quickly and confidently follow traditional methods of navigation independently in case of electronic malfunction. Moreover, you will be able to “double check” your instruments by glancing at your chart to confirm the electronic information.
Captain Don is familiar with all current electronic navigation equipment, including GPS, RADAR, Chart Plotters, Autopilot, VHF and SSB Radios, and the plethora of related items available today. He can simplify their use and teach you to effectively prioritize what can often be an overwhelming array of “information overload”.
You will learn to accurately create and follow waypoints and routes as well as Cruise Plans. In addition, you will learn the pitfalls and short comings of each instrument and how to use a practical method of “checks and balances”.
The process culminates in a Training Voyage, typically through the more intricate harbors and buoy systems in Western Long Island Sound, or in your own local area. During that time you will put into practice the skills you have learned by plotting and following your own courses and updating your position in a real-time, hands-on experience. In addition, various cruising guides and tide & current information will be put into practice.
Current vector plotting, leeway and other special piloting and navigation techniques for Sailboat and Trawler navigation are also available.
Advanced Training in Night Navigation and Collision Avoidance in Restricted Visibility focuses on RADAR vector plotting, ARPA and Mini-ARPA systems, as well as the integration of all available navigation systems.
Advanced Training in Coastal and Ocean Passage Making can be arranged by special request. Celestial Navigation, Weather Surface Analysis and Upper Atmosphere chart interpretation, Single Side Band Radio, and Survival Techniques are taught prior to and during the training voyages.
Captain Don is experienced in meeting you at your present skill level, be it total novice or intermediate, and upgrading you to the level you need to venture out to new horizons.
